XIX Biennial Conference of the European Association of Chinese Studies (EACS)

Paris, September 4th –8th 2012

General information

The XIXth Conference of the European Association of Chinese Studies (EACS) is jointly organized by the Université Paris Diderot, the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO) and the Bibliothèque des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (BULAC). These three institutions have been recently relocated in a newly developed area of Paris, known as Paris Rive Gauche, a few streets south east of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Former industrial buildings have been rehabilitated while brand new ones have been commissioned from world-class architects.

The Université Paris Diderot was set up in 1970 as a consequence of the dismantling of the Université de Paris. From the very beginning, Paris Diderot (formerly Paris 7) had a department of Oriental Studies . Several famous French sinologists headed the department, notably Jacques Gernet and Léon Vandermeersch. Paris Diderot moved to Paris Rive Gauche in 2007.

The French National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilisations  was founded in 1795 as l’Ecole des Langues Orientales. Chinese language, litterature and civilisation have been taught since 1843 by leading sinologists such as Stanislas Julien, Paul Demiéville, Paul Pelliot, or Marcel Granet. The Chinese studies department is the largest of its kind in France. Since September 2011, the various departments long scattered throughout Paris have been brought together, and relocated with all the administrative services in a brand new building, 65 rue des Grands Moulins.

The Academic Library for Languages and Civilisations is a recent institution that has merged book collections in non Western languages from various Parisian libraries. The Chinese collection is made of 40 000 books, mostly in literature, linguistics, history and social sciences, counting monographies and periodicals. The INALCO and the BULAC are located in the same building.

The EACS conference will be a great opportunity to introduce the European sinological community to the human and documentary resources gathered in this new area of Paris. At the same time, it will greatly enhance the collaboration between these three major French institutions in Chinese studies.
