The Peloponnese is usually considered as the main place for the ‘decline’ of continental Greece at the Hellenistic and Imperial periods. It is also regarded as a conservatory of traditions, and notably religious ones.

Several recent works have however put into light the specific vitality of some ‘regions’ and poleis (development of Achaia and Messenia, territorial expansion, vitality of the civic institutions through the imperial period, etc.) as well as the attachment to the civic values, the (re)creation of local traditions, the increasing role of coinage, etc.

The surveys conclude that the degraded state of some cities and rural areas — that was so shocking for the ancient authors — must be associated to a true reorganization of human occupancy between the middle of the third century B.C. and the imperial period.
The partition between the early and late Hellenistic is therefore also pertinent for the landscapes and it is probably the same as far as coinage is concerned.

This leads to a re-thinking of the history of this part of ‘old’ Greece and leads us to believe that a workshop associating specialists coming from different horizons could be fructuous.

Languages : English, French and Greek
The workshop will be published by ‘Presses Universitaires François-Rabelais’ in the Collection ‘Perspectives Historiques’ .
