Research Fellowships in European History

Institute of European History Mainz/Germany

Closing date for applications: 08.09.2006

The Institute of European History awards fellowships for a research stay in Mainz from January 2007.

The research fellowship programme of the Institute of European History combines research, training and international networking. Fellows can pursue their individual research projects in a tranquil yet inspiring atmosphere. They discuss problems and methods of European historical research in an interdiscplinary and international surrounding. According to their special fields and interests, they are invited to participate in the manifold academic activities of the Institute – organizing conferences, editing publications and newsletters, structuring online-databases and administring research fundings. In cooperation with its international partners, the Institute supports the exchange of fellows to embed them in a network of European historical research.

The Institute promotes research on the historical foundations of Europe – comparative or transnational resp. transcultural projects dealing with European communication and transfer processes, as well as projects on concepts and perceptions of »Europe« and »Europeaness« in the period since c. 1450. Funding usually ranges from six to twelve months. Applications for to the Institute’s research units (www.ieg-mainz.de/forschungsbereiche) are particularly welcome; those projects may receive extended funding. Fellows will get the chance to play an active role in the research unit they are working in. These units are:

  • The Christian Churches and the European Challenge (c. 1890–1990)
  • Religion –Mobility – Society. Interaction of religious/confessional processes and (spatial) mobility in European societies (1500–1900)
  • Historical consciousness and the change of values
  • Spatial-oriented research on the history of Europe (since 1500)

The research fellows live and work in the Institute in Mainz. They may consult archives, libraries, and specialists or attend conferences outside Mainz as well. The Institute’s library (220 000 books, more than 500 current periodicals) available to the fellows for their research. The city of Mainz is pleasantly situated in the Rhine valley and has excellent connections to all parts of Germany, Western and Central Europe. Broad, roomy squares and places, lovingly-restored half-timbered houses and magnificent Baroque churches give the town its charming, special character.

As a general rule, appointed fellows will work on their PhD thesis. Postdoctoral projects are also welcome. Post-docs must have received their PhD when applying. Foreign applicants should have knowledge of the German language to be able to follow discussions with other fellows and permanent staff.

The monthly grant is set in accordance with the guidelines established by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD – German Academic Exchange Service) for graduate students studying for a doctorate. It amounts to € 795 after completion of a course of study and € 975 after two years of scientific activity. A health insurance subsidy is also granted; a family subsidy may be granted as well (if applied for in advance). For the duration of the fellowship, fellows are not allowed to receive financial support from another side. The rent for an individual room at the Institute includes all additional costs and amounts at present to € 160 per month.

Applications must be posted by September 8th, 2006 and should include (in triplicate):

  1. the application form (download [PDF]): http://www.ieg-mainz.de/stipendienprogramm/) including the names and addresses of at least two scholars qualified to render an expert opinion on the research proposal, to be contacted by the Institute;
